May 18, 2014: Taste of Kidical!

Can you believe it's been a year?  Our very first Kidical Mass Arlington ride was just about a year ago.  We had an awesome time riding around Lubber Run and on the Bluemont Trail and ending up at the Taste of Arlington. 


This year, we're headed back to the Bluemont Trail and Taste of Arlington, but we're trying a new park to start, we're going to stop for a short playdate with a caboose and we'll ride through a section of Arlington Kidical Mass hasn't visited yet (with the requirement for flat rides, we're going to run out of these soon).  It promises to be amazing and fun, and quite taste-y.

When: Sunday, May 18, 2014 11:00am (roll out 11:15am)

Meet: Lacey Woods Park - at the play structure (near the restrooms on the map)
Parking: On the surrounding residential streets - I've heard Edison is a good bet.

End: Taste of Ballston -- Wilson Blvd & Glebe Road.

Bonus stop: Bluemont Junction Park - we'll stop for a quick (5-10 minute) look at the Caboose and group picture 

Note: The end is about a mile from the beginning.  The best route between the two, is here. Parking near the end in Ballston isn't the easiest, so I'd recommend parking at the start, and biking back at the end.  If folks want to pick a time to meet and head back, I'll be happy to lead that mini-ride.

It's shaping up to be an exciting year: Taste of Arlington, Father's Day, Tour de France, Arlington County Fair, Clarendon Day and joint rides with Kidical Mass DC and the newly formed Kidical Mass Alexandria!

It's Spring! Let's Go Ride a Bike!

For the 2014 Spring-Summer-Fall season, we're generally riding on the third Sunday of the month, with some bonus rides thrown in, and some adjustments for some special events. Here's the plan, with the usual caveat that things happen, and you should check the website for details and confirmation.

Sunday, May 18 – Taste of Kidical (a ride to the Taste of Arlington)
Sunday, June 1 – Kidically Spring
Sunday, June 15 – Daddy Kidical (Father’s Day Ride)
Sunday, July 6 – Tour de Kidical (Ride to watch the Tour de France)
Sunday, July 20 – Kidically Arlandria – Joint ride with the newly formed Kidical Mass Alexandria
Saturday, August 10 – Fairly Kidical (a ride to the Arlington Fair)
Sunday, September 14 – Kidical Meetup - DC
Saturday, September 27 – Kidically Clarendon (a ride to Clarendon Day)
Saturday, October 4 – Arlington Fun Ride Family Ride

The next Kidical Mass Arlington ride is brought to you by the letter B:
We'll meet in Buzz Bakery in Ballston and ride to the Bike Show & Tell by Arlington Public Schools (at Washington-Lee High School).

When: THIS SUNDAY (4/6/14) 11:15am (roll out 11:30am)
Meet: Buzz Bakery, Arlington 818 N Quincy St (note that the entrance is on Wilson)
End: Washington-Lee High School for the APS Bike Show & Tell
Route: Around Ashton Heights/Lyon Park - about 3 miles and nearly pancake flat!
Parking: free and easy at Arlington Central Library -- just a few blocks from both Buzz and W-L.


We'll meet up at Buzz Bakery in Arlington, which has delicious coffee and treats (in case you want to fuel up pre-ride).  From there, we'll roll around some familiar, safe neighborhood streets in Ashton Heights and Lyon Park, passing some amazing parks.  We'll roll by the Central Library and up to Washington-Lee High School, where everyone is encouraged to enjoy the Bike Show & Tell presented by Arlington Public Schools.

Spring is here! Time for more rides!

The sun is shining.  The weather is warm (finally!).  The flowers are blooming.

Happy 2014! Great ride last night!

Thanks to everyone who came out last night.  We had a great time!

An especially HUGE thanks to Westover Beer Garden, who started us out with some delicious food (seriously, even with the limited menu, their food was AMAZING).
We took off from Westover and conquered some serious hills (for Kidical Mass rides) along 16th St N.  We saw lots of cute displays of Christmas lights (though we were disappointed by 1610 Abingdon, which had taken down their lights that day).  We used the trail to get over to Cherrydale, where we LOVED 1713 Quebec.  Then we  trekked into Lyon Village to enjoy the great display at Key Blvd & Irving.

We ended up at Northside Social, where WABA's Women & Bikes treated us to some treats to warm us up after the ride.  Thank you, WABA's Women & Bikes!

Start 2014 off right with a Kidical Mass Arlington Holiday Lights / Resolutions Ride!

**UPDATE: Courtesy of WABA's Women & Bikes, the KM-A HL/R Ride will end in a bath of HOT CHOCOLATE! **

When: Wednesday, January 1, 2014, 5:30pm
Meet: Westover Beer Garden (Plenty of parking in the lot behind the shops)
End:  Northside Social

We'll roll out from Westover Beergarden at 5:30pm and head through some beautiful North Arlington neighborhoods to end up at Northside Social, where all will be treated to hot chocolate, courtesy of WABA's Women & Bikes.  Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3787943

NOTE: This is a bit longer and hillier than our normal rides (4 miles, 275 ft or so of climbing) but worth it. We'll be riding in the evening, so bring lights. It may be cold, so bundle up.  This ride isn't recommended for kids riding their own bikes for the first time.
